Ebola scare at OAU as student evacuated to Lagos for screening

OSOGBO— Academics and social activities at Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, were yesterday paralyzed following report that one of the students, who had been on admission at the university’s teaching hospital, manifested signs of victim of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.

The management of the institution, however, said the student had been evacuated to Lagos, where she would undergo thorough screening to verify if she had actually contracted the dreaded disease.

There were rumours in most parts of Osun State, yesterday, that a student of the OAU, Ile-Ife contracted the virus and had been admitted at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital OAUTH, Ile-Ife.

A student of the university who preferred anonymity said a student who recently returned from Port Harcourt was in the early hours of yesterday rushed to the university’s health centre from where he was referred to the OAUTH after showing symptoms of EVD.

The “rumour” however spread quickly as parents and guardians of students were said to be making contacts with their wards and children over the development.
A source at the OAUTH told Vanguard that a patient who claimed to be student of OAU was admitted at the hospital yesterday.

The source, however, failed to explain whether the patient was diagnosed of EVD or not as she was silent on the result of the diagnosis carried out on the patient.
But the institution’s Public Relations Officer, PRO, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, said the rumoured outbreak of EVD in the university was false as it was yet to be clinically proved.

Giving detail, Olanrewaju said the female student was discovered to have had primary contact with EVD victim in Port Harcourt, stressing that she fell sick when she arrived the university and was rushed to OAUTHC.

According to him, the student had been evacuated to Lagos, where she would undergo thorough screening to verify if she had actually contracted the disease.
While assuring that there was no established case of EVD in OAU until the result of the diagnosis to be carried out on the suspected student was released, Olanrewaju said the university community and the entire Ife town should not entertain fear over the development.

Al-Jazeera demands Egypt release four journalists

Qatar-based broadcaster Al-Jazeera has demanded the release of four of its journalists seized by Egyptian police in Cairo at the weekend. They include its Cairo bureau chief Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and former BBC correspondent Peter Greste. The journalists had held illegal meetings with the Muslim Brotherhood, the interior ministry said. Al-Jazeera said it had been "subject to harassment" although not officially banned from working in Egypt. There has been a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood since the army ousted President Mohammed Morsi in July. Last week it was declared a terrorist group. In the past six months, more than 1,000 pro-Morsi protesters have been killed in clashes with security forces, and thousands of Brotherhood supporters have been arrested, including the majority of its leadership. A court will hear a case to disband the Brotherhood's political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), on 15 February. 'Arbitrary' The four journ...

Obama in Saudi Arabia for talks overshadowed by mistrust

US President Barack Obama sought Friday to allay Riyadh’s criticism of his policies on Syria and Iran, telling the Saudi king their two countries remain in lockstep on their strategic interests. He also assured King Abdullah that the U.S. won’t accept a bad deal” with Iran, as global powers negotiate a treaty reining in Tehran’s controversial nuclear program. The president underscored how much he values this strategic relationship,” a senior U.S. official said, after Obama met for some two hours with the king on a royal estate outside Riyadh. In an interview aired on U.S. television later Friday, Obama defended his administration’s decision not to use military force in Syria, saying that the United States has its limits. The U.S. leader’s comments came in an interview taped ahead of his visit to Saudi Arabia, which was angered by his eleventh-hour decision last year to pull back from strikes against the Syrian regime over its use of chemical weapons in the country’s civil wa...
