US activist says Egypt police assaulted her

CAIRO (AP) The co-founder of U.S.-based anti-war group Code Pink says Egyptian police detained her at the airport when she tried to enter the country and assaulted her, fracturing her shoulder, as they handcuffed her before deporting her.

An Egyptian airport official denied any assault, speaking anonymously because he wasn't authorized to brief reporters.

Medea Benjamin says she was detained for hours at the airport upon arrival on route to the Gaza Strip as part of an international women's delegation. She says that when she refused to be deported without first meeting U.S. Embassy officials, they forced her into handcuffs, fracturing her shoulder. She was then put on a plane to Turkey.

She spoke from Istanbul, where she said she was kept without her passport until the next flight to the U.S.

Al-Jazeera demands Egypt release four journalists

Qatar-based broadcaster Al-Jazeera has demanded the release of four of its journalists seized by Egyptian police in Cairo at the weekend. They include its Cairo bureau chief Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and former BBC correspondent Peter Greste. The journalists had held illegal meetings with the Muslim Brotherhood, the interior ministry said. Al-Jazeera said it had been "subject to harassment" although not officially banned from working in Egypt. There has been a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood since the army ousted President Mohammed Morsi in July. Last week it was declared a terrorist group. In the past six months, more than 1,000 pro-Morsi protesters have been killed in clashes with security forces, and thousands of Brotherhood supporters have been arrested, including the majority of its leadership.
