Spike Jones and Emily Maitlis in awkward Newsnight interview

Well, this is awkward.

'Newsnight' host Emily Maitlis had some robust views about Spike Jonze's new film 'She', and director Spike Jonze clearly wanted to find out just what they were.

Cue an increasingly awkward exchange between the pair on the late-night news show, as Jonze appeared to disagree with what Maitless read into the film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls for his operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.

With Maitlis arguing the film was about technology, the pair clashed in the strangely flirtatious encounter, with Jonze insisting that the film is simply a love story.

“Just talk us through this idea of falling in love with your software,” said Maitlis.

“I'm just curious what your reaction to the movie was, because the lead in [to the interview] was all about falling in love with software, which actually the movie really isn't about,” replied Jonze, “it's more of a love story and a relationship story.”

After persistent questions from Maitlis about technology overtaking us, Jonze batted back: “No, the movie is really not about technology!

“But what about you Emily, were you really not moved by this movie?”

On having the tables turned on her, and the interviewer becoming the interviewee, Maitlis replies: “Our audience want to hear from you, not me.”

But badgering her, Paxman-style, Jonze keeps talking over her, saying: “Emily, don't avoid this question! Were you moved by it at all?”

Eventually, Maitlis admits she was, but moved quickly on once again.

This pair really need to go out on a date...
