Free-scoring Liverpool maintained their push for a Champions League place — and perhaps more — as they beat Swansea City 4-3 in a thrilling Premier League encounter on Sunday.
Jordan Henderson scored the winner 16 minutes from time — his second of the game — to keep Liverpool fourth, just four points behind leaders Chelsea. Tottenham lost ground in fifth after they were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at Norwich Daniel Sturridge scored the other goal as Liverpool won the match with their 70th league goal of the season, despite twice conceding a lead, a fact not lost on their manager, Brendan Rodgers.
“The strong part of our game came through,” Rodgers said. “Our offensive game is very aggressive and we’ve got goals in the team but we’re disappointed with the goals we conceded.
“We know we can score goals and if we’re not having one of our better days we have the character and resilience to keep fighting and we know we have the quality.
“We haven’t performed at our level but some of our goals and attacking play was at a high level.” With 12 games to go, Liverpool are within striking distance of top spot and still have home matches against leaders Chelsea and third-placed Manchester City to go.
But Rodgers said they would just continue to go about their business and see where it takes them.
“We’re just focused on winning games and no-one’s really talking about us for the title, everything’s about Chelsea, City and Arsenal,” he said.
“We’ll just try to continue to improve.” When Sturridge, rounding the goalkeeper after a fine pass by Raheem Sterling, and Henderson, with a superb finish, put Liverpool 2-0 up within 20 minutes, the match looked over.
But former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey swept in a brilliant goal for the visitors and Wilfried Bony then headed in an equalizer.
Sturridge restored Liverpool’s lead with a header before half-time but Bony equalized from the spot after shirt-pulling by Martin Skrtel, only for Henderson to find the winner.
“It’s nice to get on the scoresheet because that’s an area that I need to improve,” Henderson said. “(But) the most important thing is the final result and we got three points.
“We started well and got an early goal and got the second and we needed to see the game out from there.
“There are a lot of positives to take out of the game but things that need to be addressed and we’ll do that during the week.” Swansea manager Garry Monk said he was delighted with his side’s display, after the first 20 minutes.
“We were unlucky not to get anything against a team at the top of the table and with the games we’ve had we showed great energy,” he said.
“The attitude we showed is what we want.
